The NFL’s Week 4 has come and gone. Let’s look around the league and see which OSU alums were making headlines and plays.
James Washington Productive (Once You Throw Him the Ball)
James Washington benefited from his increased targets caused by injuries across the Steelers’ receiving corps. With Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool both missing time, the former Biletnikoff winner has seen an increased workload the last two weeks and he’s turned it into production.
During the Steelers’ 27-17 loss to Green Bay, Washington hauled in four of his five targets for a season-high 69 yards.
A report came out this offseason, and was then refuted, that Washington was interested in a change of scenery due to his lack of involvement with the Steelers offense. Through four weeks, his nine catches and 99 yards each rank fourth among Steelers.
Blake Jarwin Finds the End Zone
Current/former Cowboy tight end Blake Jarwin doesn’t always have eye-popping numbers, there’s just too many options.
During the Cowboys’ 36-28 win over the Carolina Panthers, Jarwin hauled in just one of his three targets but he picked up 18 yards and his first score of the young season.
With all the weapons surrounding him, including emerging TE Dalton Schultz who leads the position group in production, Jarwin has to fight for his touches so it’s good that he’s making the most of them.
Jarwin was the clear TE1 last season before going down for the year in Week 1, now with Schultz in the fold, Dallas has gone to a fair amount of 12 personnel (two-tight end) schemes.
Chuba Hubbard’s First Start
From the opposite sideline — and in his first career start — Chuba Hubbard was productive but the Panthers came up short.
With Carolina’s franchise running back Christian McCaffrey on the sidelines, Hubbard the rookie took the reins and carried the ball 17 times for 57 yards. He also caught both passes thrown to him from QB Sam Darnold for 14 yards.
Fantasy owners who scrambled to pick up Chuba after his debut and McCaffrey’s injury last week were irked at Darnold who rushed for two touchdowns himself while the rookie RB went scoreless.
Hubbard’s snaps could take a hit with McCaffrey eyeing a possible return in Week 5, but the Panthers star has struggled with injury issues throughout his career and it appears that Chuba has shown enough to want to keep him engaged moving forward.
Ogbah Finally Finds the QB
Emmanuel Ogbah has been in the backfield plenty this season, but his sack numbers haven’t shown it.
Ogbah did get to Colts QB Carson Wentz on Sunday during the 27-17 Indy win but it made for just a total of 1.5 sacks on the season through four games. Last season, his first in Miami, Ogbah turned in a career-high nine sacks, setting up his now contract year. In the NFL, sacks, like money, talk. His lack of QB takedowns could lead to Ogbah leaving both on the table when it’s time to make that deal this offseason.
Carson Cools a Bit
A week after his two-touchdown performance against the Vikings, Chris Carson mustered just 30 rushing yards on 13 carries during Seattle’s 28-21 win over San Francisco. Alex Collins led the Seahawks with 44 yards and a score on 10 carries.
Carson did leave the game a week prior holding his hamstring but returned. The former Cowboy is still RB1 in Seattle and will look to bounce back with another divisional matchup with the Rams in Week 5.
Ammendola Hits Game-Winner
The New York Jets secured their first win of the season and it came off the foot of the former Cowboy.
New York finished with the 27-24 overtime victory over the Tennessee Titans after Ammendola’s chip shot from 22 yards. Titans kicker Randy Bullock got his own shot to tie from 49 yards but missed.
Ammendola made both of his field goal attempts, from 27 and 22 yards, and all three of his PAT attempts. On the season, he’s 4-for-5 on 3-pointers and 3-for-3 on extra points.
