Daton Fix Finishes as NCAA Runner Up in NCAA Tournament

March 19, 2022

Daton Fix wrestled Roman Bravo Young in the NCAA finals for the second time on Saturday night and again, Fix walked away as runner up.

In an exchange in the first period Fix attempted an inside trip on RBY and Young stalled Fix’s shot. Seconds later, Bravo-Young used his length to hit and score on an ankle pick and that was ultimately the difference in the match. Fix got a quick escape to make it 2-1, and in the second tied it at 2-2 with another escape. Fix had one pretty strong shot later in the period but was unable to finish and score. In the third, Bravo-Young got an escape and Fix was unable to mount any offense to score and win, and Bravo-Young took the bout 3-2.

At 174, Dustin Plott entered the day as an All-American and consolation semifinalist. He wrestled NC State’s Hayden Hidlay, who eventually finished third in the tournament, and fell 8-2. In the fifth place match he wrestled Logan Massa for the second time this weekend and lost 5-1 to finish in sixth place.

The Cowboys finished with only two All-Americans for the second time in program history. They’ve finished with just one only once in program history, in 2009. They also finished tied for 14th, the second-worst finish in program history behind that 2009 season where they finished 16th.
