Oklahoma blown out at No. 9 Texas Tech, 66-42

Sooners stall, Red Raiders soar as OU loses seventh game in last eight

The Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball team traveled down to Lubbock with a major opportunity to sweep the No. 9 Texas Tech Red Raiders, and for a large part of the first half it looked like that was in play. However, after the Sooners got within four points with just under four minutes to go in the first half, the offense stalled out and Texas Tech took over, ultimately winning going away, 66-42.

After the Sooners cut the lead to 25-21, OU went on an 8 minute 46-second scoring drought that spanned the final four minutes of the first half and the first four of the second half. In that time the Red Raiders lead ballooned to 17, 39-22. To go along with the first drought, the Red Raiders also went on a 19-0 run to blow the game wide open late in the second half.

This has been a problem for Oklahoma all season long, scoring droughts that effectively eliminate the Sooners from making a realistic late game push.

Now the offense wasn’t good the rest of the game anyway, with no Sooners scoring in double-figures, in fact, this was the first time since at least the 2004-2005 season that not one Sooner was able to net at least 10 points.

However, The energy wasn’t there regardless of any statistics. This game was decided early in the second half and the Sooners put up little effort to flip the script.

Now, you have to give Tech their credit; the Red Raider defense is elite and proved it once again on Tuesday, forcing 21 turnovers, stealing the ball 11 times and scoring 26 points off of those turnovers.

The Red Raiders were just better all around. Tech dominated the second half, 37-20, won the rebounding battle 31-17 and shot 58.3% from the field, compared to Oklahoma’s 36.4%.

Overall, there’s no more margin for error for the Sooners. Oklahoma now sits at .500 on the season, 14-14, and an abysmal 4-11 in Big 12 play. Heading into Tuesday’s game Joe Lunardi, slated OU as one of the first four teams outside of March Madness, and then OU lost again. There are three games remaining, Oklahoma State, West Virginia and at Kansas State, who all have 12+ losses. The Sooners need all three and potentially another win in Kansas City to force their way into the Big Dancd. Without Elijah Harkless, the lack of consistent scoring and a stagnant bench, the Sooners are in bad shape heading into must win territory. If the energy doesn’t return, it’s time to start looking to the 2022-2023 season.

What’s Next?

The Sooners try to get back above .500 this Saturday when the Oklahoma State Cowboys (13-14 overall, 6-9 Big 12) come to the Lloyd Noble Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 11 a.m. on CBS.

Oklahoma suffers suffocating loss at Cyclones, 75-54

February 19, 2022
Syndication: The Des Moines Register
Nirmalendu Majumdar/Ames Tribune / USA TODAY NETWORK

Sooners lose sixth game in the last seven.

The Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball team is officially in the danger zone for missing March Madness this year, falling at Iowa State 75-54. The Sooners are now barely above .500 at 14-13 on the season, and a miserable 4-10 in Big 12 play, losing six of their last seven contests.

OU started off red hot shooting 3-3 from the field and leading 10-5, but it was basically all Cyclones after that. ISU outscored the Sooners 35-15 the rest for the first half to take a 40-25 lead into the break. To really illustrate the Sooners struggles, OU made as many baskets in the first half as they had turnovers, nine.

No doubt Friday’s announcement that one of the Sooners’ leaders, Elijah Harkless, would be out the rest of the season impacted the team, but other guys have to step up and that just didn’t happen, especially on the defensive end.

The Sooners got the game to single digits after the under eight timeout, but then the Cyclones went on a 15-0 run to put the game away. Nine Cyclones scored, including three in double-figures, lead by Izaiah Brockington with 22 points.

Now there were some offensive highlights, including 10-5 starts in both halfs, cutting the lead down to five with about 13 minutes to go in the game, 49-44. However, It wasn’t sustained at a high enough level for Oklahoma to win. Just six Sooners scored in total, three in double figures; Jordan Goldwire and Jalen Hill did their best, both putting up 15 points, while Jacob Groves added in 11. The Sooners struggled, like they have a lot during conference play, with Tanner Groves racking up only seven points, while Umoja Gibson netted just four points, 0-4 from beyond the arc.

Once again, the bench was almost non-existent, especially without Harkless providing that spark. The OU bench totaled just two points on five shots, compare that to Iowa State’s bench that scored 15 points on nine shots.

Overall, the team had to just quickly after Harkless was officially out, but the margin of error is gone. We are talking about the same issues we have for months; the Sooners were out rebounded 21-20, out-assisted 19-12 and turned the ball over 16 times to the Cyclones’ 11. OU probably needs three of these last four games to force a tournament berth, but if they don’t get contributions from the bench and start to flip the rebounds and assists in their favor, the season will be officially over in the next couple weeks.

What’s Next?

Oklahoma looks to stop the bleeding and stay above .500 on Tuesday when they travel to Lubbock, Texas and face off with the No. 11 Texas Tech Red Raiders (21-6 overall, 10-4 Big 12) on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.

Oklahoma Basketball has a big double-header in Ames, while diamond sports start strong this weekend

Happy Friday, Sooners friends and fans!

Oklahoma Sooners basketball hasn’t had the best week. The men’s basketball team lost to No. 20 Texas again, 80-78, on Tuesday. The Sooners got the Longhorns to overtime, but couldn’t get the defensive stops when they were needed, while the bench didn’t contribute much either. The Oklahoman’s Justin Martinez gives us his main takeaways from the Sooners’ heartbreaking loss to Texas. Next up Oklahoma looks for their first sweep of the season as they travel to Iowa State on Saturday at 1 p.m. on ESPN+. Oklahoma needs probably at least three of these last four games to make sure they get a shot in March Madness.

Tough news on Friday as well as Elijah Harkless announced he will miss the remainder of the season duet so an injury, but will be back next season and ready to “shock the world.” This is a big loss for the Sooners down the stretch as Harkless averages 10 points per game (4th most on the team), has contributed 45 assists (2nd most) and grabbed 4.1 rebounds per game (3rd). Multiple players will need to step up in his absence.

Another topic that’s been floating around for a while is Oklahoma Basketball potentially getting a new arena. The topic picked up steam this week as men’s head coach Porter Moser said the time for a new venue is now. The OU Daily’s Colton Sulley puts the topic in context.

  • The Oklahoma Sooners women’s basketball team has hit a skid at a tough time in their schedule, losing back-to-back games for the first time this season. Wednesday was a tough defeat as the Sooners fell to the Texas Tech Lady Raiders, 97-87, who were riding a 7-game-losing streak. The Oklahoman breaks down how the upset happened and what the Sooners can do to avoid another tough loss.
  • It’s a double-header in Ames as the Sooners will face off with the Cyclones after the men on Saturday at 6 p.m, also on ESPN+.

OU Softball

  • The No.1 Oklahoma Sooners softball team is 7-0 and so far outscored their opponents 63-2 on the season, after day one of the Houston Classic. McNeese State was first up and the Sooners dismanteled the Cowgirls 15-1 in just five innings. Jordy Bahl got the win in the circle again after throwing four strikeouts in just 3.1 innings, she is now 3-0 on the season. Tiare Jennings racked up three hits and three-RBI, while Grace Lyons also added in three hits and a homerun.
  • The Sooners earned their 7th win of the season, 5th by run-rule, against Houston. OU beat the Cougars 8-0. Nicole May pitched a complete game one hit shutout. Jana Johns and Jayda Coleman each brought in two-RBI, while five total Sooners logged hits.
  • Next up, the Sooners face off with McNeese State and Houston again Saturday. The Sooners and Cowgirls play at 12:30 p.m. on Sooners Sports TV. Oklahoma and Houston matchup at 3 p.m. on ESPN+.

OU Baseball

  • Oklahoma Sooners Baseball gets their season started this weekend in the College Baseball Showdown at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
  • The Sooners got things going in a big way, beating Auburn 3-0 Friday afternoon. Four Sooners got their turns on the hill, compiling five total strikeouts and three total hits. Jake Bennett got the start, only allowing one hit through five innings, while Colton Sundloff got the win, pitching two innings and also allowing just one hit. OU only got four hits, but Peyton Graham opened the game up with a two-run long ball in the bottom of the 7th. Cade Horton also made contact to bring in Tanner Tredaway in the 8th to finish the scoring.
  • OU will also play Arizona on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday against Michigan at 6:30 p.m. You can catch all these games on flobaseball.com.

OU Football

  • It was announced Friday that the College Football Playoff will not expand beyond four teams for the remainder of the contract, meaning through 2025, and Oklahoma’s time in the Big 12, the Playoff will not be expanding, for good or for bad. The Tulsa World’s Guerin Emig breaks down why not expanding the Playoff now is absurd and will lead to missed opportunities.
  • Also, College Football News compiled all of the Final Top 25 polls from the AP and USA Today and determined, based off the final polls, OU is the best college football program in history.
