Gundy Says Tre Sterling Is Out for the Season

September 19, 2021

BOISE, Idaho — The Cowboys will be without one of their star safeties for the remainder of the year.

After Oklahoma State’s 21-20 victory against Boise State on Saturday night, OSU coach Mike Gundy said Tre Sterling would miss the remainder of the season. Gundy said his absence is injury related, but didn’t specify on the injury itself.

“Tre is done for the year,” Gundy said. “We put him in the list with the other guys, unfortunately.”

Sterling burst into OSU’s lineup as a sophomore in 2019 where he had 70 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, an interception and eight pass breakups. He followed that up with an equally impressive junior campaign where he made 74 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and two INTs, one of which he returned for a touchdown.

In 1.5 games this season, Sterling had eight tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss.

Jason Taylor started in Sterling’s place the past two games. A redshirt junior out of Carl Albert, Taylor has a knack for making plays when he gets in the action.

Against Kansas State last season, Taylor had an 85-yard fumble return touchdown. A few weeks later, he returned an onside kick 48 yards for a score against Texas Tech.

Taylor nearly had another touchdown last week when he picked off a pass against Tulsa and scampered to the end zone. That play was called back because of a defensive holding, though. Taylor even made a play Saturday against Boise State when he blocked the Bronco’s go-ahead field-goal attempt in the final minutes of the game.

“I hate that for Tre and I hate that he’s done for the year, but that is a position where we got some guys,” Gundy said. “It’s not like we’re putting a freshman out there like at wide receiver.”
