Oklahoma looked solid in the desert during quarterfinal match play.

On Tuesday, at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, the Oklahoma Sooners defeated the Illinois Fighting Illini, 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship.

After Illinois’ Adrien Dumont de Chassart secured his team’s first point of the day over OU’s Patrick Welch, the Sooners claimed three of the next four matches to advance to the semifinal round. Oklahoma’s Jonathan Brightwell took care of the Fighting Illini’s Giovanni Tadiotto, while OU’s Logan McAllister outshot Jerry Ji and veteran Sooner Quade Cummins bested Tommy Kuhl to effectively move another step closer toward bookending his personal career with a pair of national championships.

Other than Welch, the only other Sooner to not win their individual matchup was Blake Lorenz, who fell to Illinois’ Michael Feagles.

Oklahoma is looking to win the program’s third national title and its second under head coach Ryan Hybl. Next, the Sooners will face the top-seeded Arizona State Sun Devils in the semifinals scheduled for 2:45 p.m. CT later this afternoon. TV coverage is set to begin on the Golf Channel at 4 p.m. CT.
