Joe Smith Named Head Wrestling Coach at Heritage Hall

May 1, 2022

Heritage Hall in Oklahoma City announced on Friday that former Cowboy wrestler Joe Smith will be taking over as the school’s new head wrestling coach.

Joe, the son of current Oklahoma State head coach John Smith, was a two-time All-American for the Cowboys in 2016 and 2017. He was most recently coaching at the Cowboy Wrestling Club and the Regional Training Center at OSU.

Rounding out Smith’s wrestling program staff at Heritage Hall will be returning assistant coach Dustin Sanders, and newly hired junior high coach Jordan McGuire. Sanders won three State Championships with Lawton Macarthur in the late 1990’s. McGuire currently co-owns True Grit Fitness and wrestled at UCO in the early 2010’s.

Smith takes over a Charger wrestling program that is already rich with talent and tradition. Heritage Hall was the 2022 State Runner-Up in Class 3A and returns individual State Champions K.J. Evans (OU commit) and E.J. Beloncik (Air Force Academy commit) along with Junior David Park, who battled a tough bracket to claim third place at state, while freshman Peyton Park made some noise in his state tournament debut.

Smith was hired by Chris Gfeller, the father of last year’s starting 149 pounder at Oklahoma State, Kaden Gfeller.

Gfeller, the Heritage Hall Athletic Director, is excited about the new hire. “We look forward to Coach Smith working with our student-athletes on and off the mat and to many exciting seasons of Charger wrestling under his direction.”
