Justin Blackmon Hints at Possible NFL Comeback

May 25, 2021

Former Oklahoma State star Justin Blackmon, the only receiver in the history of college football to win the Biletnikoff Award twice, might just be making an attempt at an NFL comeback.

Blackmon rejoined Instagram this week and, after being asked about a potential connection with incoming No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence, Blackmon had one simple message: “Let’s make it happen.” (H/T CBS Sports)

Now here’s the catch: Blackmon isn’t exactly a spring chicken anymore. He last appeared in an NFL game in 2013. At 31 years old, he’d be a longshot to make the 53-man roster. And the last time he was making news was when he was getting arrested. (A DUI in 2015 was his fourth arrest in five years.)

Still, it’s hard to ignore his talent and just how productive he was. If not for off-field issues, he’s perhaps putting the final touches on a Hall of Fame career. He was fifth in the NFL in receiving yards per game in 2013, averaging over 100 in four showings. That was the last we’ve seen of him on the field though, unfortunately. He was suspended for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy and after the marijuana possession arrest, he was denied reinstatement back into the league.

Maybe the odds are long — heck, his Instagram bio even says “retired” — but here’s to hoping we can see more of No. 14 on the field. If he’s got his stuff together and he’s in shape, it doesn’t seem totally impossible to envision at least one NFL team willing to give him a chance to make the roster. If not, then surely they’d reconsider after being reminded of his greatness:
