Mike Boynton Named Assistant Coach on Team USA U18 Team This Summer

May 6, 2022

OSU men’s basketball coach Mike Boynton on Friday was named as an assistant coach for this summer’s Team USA U18 team at the 2022 FIBA U18 Americas Men’s Championship, USA Basketball announced in a press release. Boynton, 40, will serve as one of two assistants on head coach (and current Colorado coach) Tad Boyle’s staff. Boise State head coach Leon Rice is the other assistant on staff. Matt Langel, Rob Lanier and Tommy Lloyd will serve as court coaches — the same role Boynton once served on — during training camp.

“Working with this coaching staff is an opportunity for me to grow professionally, and for us to grow professionally together,” Boyle said in a statement. “That’s what is great about these kinds of experiences. I’ve had two of them previously with John Calipari and Danny Manning and Mark Few and Mike Brown. So having the opportunity to learn and grow with Leon and Mike is something that I look forward to as well.”

Boynton brings experience to Boyle’s staff having previously served Team USA in helping select its 2021 U19 World Cup Team and in developing the selected talent as a court coach. He did not serve as an assistant, but was an evaluator that helped put together a gold medal-winning team over France in the World Cup with a roster led by likely 2022 lottery picks Chet Holmgren, Jaden Ivey and Johnny Davis.

The U.S. — which will first hold a training camp in Houston prior to the event — won gold at the 2018 FIBA U18 Americas Championship and has won a gold medal at nine of its last 11 FIBA Americas U18 Championship appearances since the event started in 1990.
