Mike Boynton Set to Host Two Four-Star, In-State Prospects This Weekend

May 13, 2022

The state of Oklahoma is deep in the 2023 class, and Mike Boynton is working to keep that crop close to home.

Del City’s Brandon Garrison and Tulsa Union’s Trent Pierce will be in Stillwater this weekend visiting Oklahoma State, both prospects told PFB. Both are four-star recruits, and they share an AAU team, playing on Team Griffin on Nike’s EYBL.

A 6-foot-9 big, Garrison is the top prospect from the state in the cycle. He ranks 56th in the composite rankings, which is sixth among centers in the class. Garrison is a highly sought after prospect. He holds offers from Kansas, Arkansas, LSU, Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and others.

Garrison is a rim-running big with a similar play style to the Miami Heat’s Bam Adebayo. Through eight games in the EYBL this spring, Garrison has averaged 12.8 points and seven rebounds while shooting 62% from the field.

This won’t be the only time Garrison and Boynton see each other this summer either. Garrison was invited to USA Basketball’s U18 camp ahead of the FIBA U18 Americas Championships. Boynton will be an assistant coach with that group.

“I like [Oklahoma State] a lot,” Garrison told PFB last month. “They’re showing a lot of love.”

Pierce has seen his stock rise this offseason, most notably when ESPN moved him to No. 74 in its updated rankings. The composite rankings list Pierce as the No. 116 player in the cycle. He has offers from Illinois, Kansas State, Oklahoma and others.

Pierce is a versatile player in that he is 6-8, but he can defend nearly every spot on the floor and shoot the 3. He has averaged 10.3 points and 4.1 rebounds on the EYBL circuit while shooting 43% from 3-point range.

The Cowboys’ 2023 class has been reset. Parker Friedrichsen, another in-state four-star, decommitted this week. It’s still relatively early in the cycle, though. After Friedrichsen’s decommitment only Texas Tech and Baylor have 2023 commits among Big 12 programs.
