According to a report from OUInsider’s Brandon Drumm, the redshirt sophomore pass rusher has decided to sit out the 2020 season.
According to OU Insider’s Brandon Drumm, Oklahoma Sooners redshirt sophomore DL Jalen Redmond will opt out of the 2020 college football season.

In his two years at OU, Redmond has dealt with his share of physical setbacks. Most recently, the Midwest City native underwent shoulder surgery this spring. Yet perhaps most notably, he was forced to sit out the majority of the 2018 season as he overcame a serious blood clotting issue. With so much still to learn about the coronavirus , it’s not difficult to understand why Redmond would elect to make this decision.
Redmond now joins redshirt junior running back Kennedy Brooks as the second OU player to opt out of the 2020 season .
Losing Redmond’s presence on the field this fall will be a significant blow for a defensive line that already has to replace a number of contributors from 2019 and is currently looking at as many as five games (barring a reduction) without Ronnie Perkins. In 13 games as a redshirt freshman, he led the team in sacks with 6.5, made 29 total tackles (including 11-for-loss), broke up two passes and forced a fumble.
So who can the Sooners possibly lean on in Redmond’s absence in 2020? Senior LaRon Stokes was named Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year in his debut campaign last season. As far as younger players go, keep an eye on redshirt freshman Kori Roberson out of Manvel, Texas. At 6’4, 288 pounds, he definitely has the size to withstand life in the trenches, and he was able to see action in four games in ‘19 per the updated redshirt rules.
