OSU was picked to finish fourth in the Big 12 in this preseason’s media poll, and while that feels like disrespect to the mullet and his myriad returning pieces, the folks in Vegas seem to be even more unconvinced of OSU’s Big 12 title chances in 2021.
Updated odds from SuperBook Sports give OSU the fifth-best odds of winning the league in 2021, and the separation between the fourth and fifth-best is substantial, with TCU at 14-1 and OSU all the way at 25-1. Only West Virginia, Baylor, Kansas State, Texas Tech and Kansas have worse odds.
This means if you bet $100 on OSU to win the Big 12 title and they do indeed win, the payout is $2,500. If you bet $100 on Texas, the payout is $1,000. And if you bet $100 on Kansas, then you just wasted $100.
OU, meanwhile, is the odds-on favorite at 4/5, meaning to bet $100 you would win less than your original investment ($80, in this case).
I could make a case for several teams here — and the value lies outside of the overwhelming favorite, no doubt — but OU winning six straight conference championships and having a Heisman frontrunner running the show feels like it’d render all my cases moot.
