Around the Big 12 – Max Duggan did indeed take over the TCU QB duties midway through last week’s game, and the Horned Frog passing game improved drastically once this occurred. Even though the rushing attack’s debut was a complete dud in the form of 99 yards on 44 carries, I think this offense can do some damage against Texas. I don’t think they’ll pull the upset, but Texas will have to pull out another clutch W (and get way too much credit for it). Elsewhere, I like OSU to win (but Kansas to cover), West Virginia to beat Baylor in Morgantown and Kansas State to win and cover against Texas Tech .
Perkins Rumors – Friday night and Saturday morning have been flooded with rumors of suspended DE Ronnie Perkins being reinstated and eligible to play in tonight’s game. We can confirm that he did indeed travel to Ames with the team, and while this doesn’t serve as confirmation of a reinstatement, it could certainly be a good sign.
The turnover battle – As Allen Kenney pointed out earlier this week, Oklahoma did a decent job strictly from a perspective of play-to-play defensive success rate. For those who are wondering, success rate refers to a team’s ability to gain 50 percent of necessary yardage on first down, 70 percent on second down, and 100 percent on third and fourth down. Since the Sooners held Kansas State to a very low 33 percent success rate, it’s obvious that this game was completely swung by 5-10 impact plays. Four of those were turnovers, but you can call it five if you include a blocked punt. If I can simply eliminate the turnover margin and at least work on even ground in that regard, I like OU’s chances.
