OSU Wrestling: Missouri Hands Oklahoma State Its Third Dual Loss in Two Weeks

February 6, 2022

In what was projected to be the dual of the year in the Big 12 this preseason, Oklahoma State faced off with Missouri in Columbia in the two programs’ first matchup since the Tigers returned to the Big 12.

Both teams have not quite lived up to expectations this season, but the dual lived up to the preseason hype.

The Cowboys started off solid with three straight wins from 141-157. Carter Young started things off with a 7-4 decision over NCAA qualifier Connor Brown, which was followed up by a huge fall for Kaden Gfeller over Josh Edmond. In one of the true toss-ups of the dual, Wyatt Sheets took our Jarrett Jacques after a ride out in the third period gave him a 2-1 decision.

The tide shifted back to Missouri briefly when Keegan O’Toole beat Travis Wittlake at 165 and Mizzou’s Sean Harman upset Dustin Plott in a potentially big swing match for the dual.

Dakota Geer answered at 184 with a reversal and a ton of riding time to take a 3-0 decision and put the Cowboys up 15-6.

Missouri’s Elam brothers flipped everything back in Missouri’s favor. They picked up a decision at 197 then in a wild heavyweight match, Luke Surber got the first takedown, gave up a reversal, got a reversal, put Elam on his back, then was flipped onto his back and pinned. This tied the dual up at 15 with two matches remaining.

At 125, OSU rolled out Alexander Yokubaitis, a four-time state champion out of Louisiana after Trevor Mastrogiovanni suffered an injury on Friday night at the end of the South Dakota State dual.

Yokubaitis competed for a bit but was eventually pinned. This locked down the dual for Missouri which led on criteria. The best Oklahoma State could do was tie, but the Cowboys still would’ve lost the dual. Daton Fix fought for the fall, but was unable to get it (though it wouldn’t have mattered and OSU still would’ve lost). And OSU fell to Missouri 21-20.

The Cowboys move to 11-3 on the season. They face Iowa next week at the Bout at the Ball Park in Arlington.
