The Cowboys opened their 2021-22 season on Saturday with a win, defeating Stanford on the road.
The dual opened up at 125 with Trevor Mastrogiovanni. Mastro gave up a little bit of a ride in the second but scored two takedowns to beat Logan Ashton 5-2.
Daton Fix dominated on his feet, as he always does, but gave up over two minutes of riding time to Jackson DiSario, walking away with a 7-3 decision.
Dusty Hone got the start at 141 after a lot of conversation about this weight, dominating Jason Miranda picking up a 9-0 decision. The NCAA cleared OSU freshman Carter Young, who reportedly won the wrestle-off with Hone last weekend and was just given the go-ahead to wrestle by the NCAA last night.
The Cowboys took their first loss of the night at 149 when Jaden Abas majored Kaden Gfeller. Wyatt Sheets put the Cowboys back on track with a 6-3 decision over Charlie Darracott.
In the marquee match of the night, Travis Wittlake took on NCAA Champion Shane Griffith. Wittlake got in on a shot in the first and nearly picked up a takedown off an ankle pick, but was unable to finish. The match went to the second period 0-0. From there it was all Griffith as he picked up an escape and takedown in the second then rode out the period. Wittlake took bottom in the third and was ridden out again to fall 4-0 to the defending NCAA champion.
Dustin Plott got the Cowboys back on the winning side with a really close 7-6 decision over Tyler Eischens.
The veterans of the program really seemed to look the best of the group as Dusty Hone and Dakota Geer both controlled their opponents. Geer picked apart Ethan Woods on his way to a 22-7 tech.
AJ Ferrari physically dominated, as he always seems to do, en route to a 16-3 MAJ Decision over Nick Stemmet.
Luke Surber closed the night out with his heavyweight debut against Peter Ming. Ming was coming off a win at the Menlo Open tournament and Surber pretty solidly picked him apart on his way to a 14-3 MAJ decision.
Takeaways:
Overall, an ok performance, but the struggles from bottom for Daton Fix and Travis Wittlake are certainly a concern. Both are elite on their feet, but have work to do to improve their mat game, specifically getting away from good riders.
The upper weights looked great. Geer and Ferrari dominated solid opponents, and Surber handled a pretty decent heavyweight who was coming off a tournament win in the opening week of the season.
