Former Oklahoma State linebacker Calvin Bundage just hit a pothole on the road to fulfilling his NFL dream.
On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced that Bundage, as well as offensive tackle Jarron Jones had been released to make room for Melvin Ingram III, another linebacker, and Chaz Green another OT.
Bundage was the top-ranked recruit in OSU’s 2016 class and quickly made a name for himself for his as a dynamic playmaker for the Cowboys defense. He played in 11 games a true freshman and moved into a starting position by 2017, and continued to be a key cog in OSU’s defense in 2018.
He sat out all of 2019 with a back injury but returned in 2020, playing in all 11 games and led the Cowboys with seven sacks and six QB hurries. He was eligible to stick around for another year thanks to the COVID-19 eligibility extension but, after five years in Stillwater, decided to take his shot at NFL career.
Bundage went undrafted this spring but signed with the Steelers shortly after and took place in rookie minicamp.
Teams can roster up to 90 players at the start of training camp which kicks off July 29. That group will be whittled down to a 53-man active roster before the start of the season, casting serious doubt on Bundage’s chances of sharing a locker room with his former teammates Mason Rudolph and James Washington. He is eligible to land on another team before training camp.
