Steve Owens Happy for Baker Mayfield

December 8, 2017

1969 Heisman Trophy winner Steve Owens joined “Total Sports” host James Hale on Friday to recollect on winning the Heisman and had some glowing things to say about OU standout quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Of course, Mayfield is in New York City getting ready for the Heisman Ceremony which will take place Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m. on ESPN from the PlayStation Theater. Mayfield is expected to win the award going away over fellow Heisman finalists Bryce Love (Stanford running back) and Lamar Jackson (Louisville quarterback).

Owens could hardly contain his enthusiasm when talking about Mayfield.

“I’m so proud of Baker and I’m so excited. Of course, he had a great night last night,” Owens said of Mayfield winning the Walter Camp Player of the Year, Maxwell Award and Davey O’Brien Award.

“I just wanted to say I’m so proud of him, our coaches, Lincoln and the Sooner nation. Great year for the Sooners and I’m so happy for them. Of course, I’m so happy that Baker is going to have this Heisman experience, man. I’m just so excited. I think he’s a great ‘feller, great personality and just a great competitor.”
