Mike Boynton plucked another 3-point shooter out of the portal.
Texas State transfer Caleb Asberry committed to Oklahoma State on Tuesday. Asberry is coming off a season with the Bobcats where he was named to the All-Sun Belt First Team after averaging 13.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists a game. Because of the pandemic, Asberry should have just one season of eligibility remaining.
Listed at 6-foot-3, 170 pounds, Asberry hit 38% of his 164 3-point attempts last season, and he has hit 40% of his 3s across the past two seasons. He scored in the 20s six times last season. He had a season-high 26 points against Troy in a game where he was 6-for-6 from 3-point range.
“I played him six times at ULM,” OSU commit Russell Harrison said of Asberry. “I think he’s a good player, man. He can really score the ball, and I think he’s a good on-ball defender. He’s athletic, as well, for his size. I definitely think he could score the ball, and he could fill it up quick shooting that 3 ball.”
Asberry is originally from Pflugerville, Texas, and he went the junior college route before ending up in San Marcos. He averaged 19.7 points a game as a high school senior before landing at Ranger College for the 2018-19 season. That season he averaged 10.5 points a game while shooting 44% from 3.
He struggled in shooting the 3 in his first season at Texas State, hitting only 25% of his 93 attempts, but that percentage took a huge jump during the 2020-21 season, where he hit 42% of his 120 attempts.
Asberry announced he would enter the transfer portal March 22.
He becomes the third player OSU has gotten from the portal this offseason, joining High Point transfer John-Michael Wright and Louisiana Monroe transfer Russell Harrison. Combined, Asberry, Harrison and Wright hit 192 3s last season on a 37% clip.
Asberry gets OSU up to 12 scholarships used of a possible 13. Because of NCAA sanctions, OSU is expected to use 12 scholarships for the 2022-23 season, meaning this is likely it for the Cowboys this offseason, as long as Avery Anderson returns from the NBA draft pool..
